challenge — How can we help urban people reconnect with nature in their daily lives?
solution — Beautiful wall art that displays the wildlife around you in real time. The wall art recieves data wirelessly from your backyard’s wildlife units (like bird feeders) through sensors. This data is turned into beautiful visualizations that can be decoded by colour and brightness. Along with a small prototype of the wall art, I created two booklets, one to explain the technical details and one to explain the setup. I developed the branding and created six custom paintings of urban wildlife.
concept — media fauna explores the boundaries between humans & wildlife in urban spaces. It enables urban city dwellers to create a deeper connection with the wildlife surrounding them, as well as fostering and encouraging local wildlife. A variety of wildlife units can be chosen from, depending on the kinds of wildlife present in one’s outdoor space. The sensors within them allow the system to recognize the type of wildlife and amount of activity. This data is sent to the wall display, which is placed indoors, and displays the data in pleasing, abstract visualizations. Visualizations become more colourful and complex with more wildlife units connected. I developed this product as a part of my thesis in the final year of my Bachelor of Design.
